Special relativity caps any object's speed through space at c. Warp theory looks for a loophole: not pushing harder, but reshaping space itself so that the ship is carried by it. Miguel Alcubierre's 1994 metric was the first concrete example — a bubble of contracted space ahead and expanded space behind, the ship inside in free fall. The catch was that it required negative energy density, which we have no engineering for. No working device exists, and may never. But the legitimate scientific question — can general relativity admit a non-pathological warp solution — has shifted from 'no' to 'maybe, with caveats.' The applied edge is gravitational-wave astronomy (LIGO, LISA): for the first time, we read spacetime curvature as a signal.
